The workshop will give you the opportunity to create your own software sound synthesiser and different chat bots that will be used to manipulate and turn your chat into a music score. To achieve this, we will use free software such as Python, Supercollider, Puredyne, Emacs and more!

BEASTmulch System

BEASTmulch System is a software tool for the presentation of electroacoustic music over multichannel systems. Designed primarily with a classic ‘live diffusion’ model in mind, it is nevertheless flexible enough to be adapted for a number of purposes, and can support input and output configurations of arbitrary complexity (i.e. live inputs, soundfiles with varying numbers of channels, etc.).

The software has numerous features (e.g. realtime reconfigurable routing, channel processing, automation, etc.), incorporates various standard and non-standard spatialisation techniques (VBAP, ambisonics, etc.), and adapts easily to both small and large (i.e. > 100 loudspeakers) systems.

BEASTmulch System is the software component of the BEAST concert system.

System Requirements: Mac OSX 10.4 - 10.5 (10.6 compatibility forthcoming)

BEASTmulchLib

BEASTmulchLib is a SuperCollider class library designed for use in the creation, processing and presentation of complex multichannel signal chains. Objects include sources, matrix routers and mixers, and sound processors and spatialisers. The latter are based on a simple user-extensible plugin architecture. Many classes have elegant GUI representations.

The library also includes classes which represent a variety of different controllers, including MIDI controllers, GUI Faders, EtherSense, etc., and provides support for controller automation (i.e automated mixing and diffusion).

It supports a number of common spatialisation techniques, such as Ambisonics, and includes SC ports of Ville Pullki’s Vector Base Amplitude Panning (VBAP), and the Loris analysis resynthesis method. It also supports some idiosyncratic techniques, such as Spatial Swarm Granulation, and provides utility classes for Speaker Array balancing and visualisation.

N.B. Currently the library is not fully cross-platform: GUI classes and UGens are OSX only.

The first day (Saturday, Oct 17) is devoted to beginners, and should give you a head start for working with SuperCollider. If you have already experience in SuperCollider, or feel ready to go to the next level after Saturday’s class, we offer an intermediate workshop the next day.

Each class is $110, and if you sign up for both classes right away, the price is $190 instead of $220.

The class is part of our month long New York Electronic Arts Festival (http://www.nyeaf.org/). On Friday before the class (Oct 16), Nick will also play on the opening night of our festival at Roulette’s, as part of his duo “Nic vs. Nick”, together with equally famous hardware hacker Nic Collins from Chicago, employing live coding and live circuit building.

To sign up for the classes, or if you have questions call Hans Tammen at 212-431-1130 ext 130. You can also conveniently sign up at
http://www.harvestworks.org/cms/index.php/Classes/Classes-new.html
where you will also find the schedule for the upcoming months. Membership is $75/yr, and you can pay for the membership when you sign up for the class.

SUPERCOLLIDER: BEGINNER’S WORKSHOP

Nick Collins

Saturday 17th October, 10am - 5pm

Class cost: $110

SUPERCOLLIDER: INTERMEDIATE WORKSHOP

Nick Collins

Sunday 18th October, 10am - 5pm

Class cost: $110

—> Take both classes for $190

Saturday 17th October: Beginners day
A friendly introduction to SuperCollider for absolute beginners, aimed at artists and musicians. Aside from a little familiarity with the digital arts, no prerequisites, though some prior exposure to computer music (perhaps through Max/MSP or Csound) may be helpful.

Sunday 18th October: Intermediate day
Would be suitable for those who have taken the previous day’s beginner workshop, as well as those wanting to refresh or extend their skills. The emphasis here will be on live performance with SuperCollider, and facilitating participants’ own projects. The workshop will be adaptable to participants’ needs, and I will take requests for topics, and run a general question and answer session.

We are pleased to announce that SuperCollider 3.3 is now released.

Visit the SuperCollider downloads page to get binary or source-code downloads for your platform.

There are many changes since 3.2 (see the changelog for full detail) but here are some headlines:

GUI system updates: easier syntax, plus a major update of GUI documentation, as well as extra features such as modal sheets, SCLevelIndicator, and menu item manipulation

New UGens added:

BEQSuite filter UGens (popular set of nice-sounding filters)

PartConv (efficient frequency-domain convolution)

SendReply (sends arrays from server to the language client)

VDiskIn (like DiskIn but with variable rate)

LFGauss

Buffer recording/playback UGens used to be limited to 16-channel; now they can handle massively multi-channel audio

SCImage for manipulating bitmap image objects (mac only)

LocalBuf framework allows synths to create/free their own “private” buffers, simplifying buffer management in many situations

Various behind-the-scenes efficiency improvements, for a sleeker audio server that can do more on a given machine

(Note: the Windows build of 3.3 is still in alpha stages and so is not yet a “stable” release… watch this space)
