In the 1970s, composers such as Gottfried Michael Koenig, Herbert Brün, and Iannis Xenakis independently developed sound synthesis methods, which were not derived from acoustic, harmonic, or mathematical theories but from compositional principles. These composers sought radical new ways of describing sound, the composition of sound instead of with sound, and strove for extending compositional control to the lowest possible level. By treating the digital sample (instantaneous sound pressure level) as an elementary material for musical composition and by composing sonic micro-fluctuations with stochastic means, they laid the foundations of microsound and blurred the distinction of sound and music. These systems and aesthetic position still constitute a challenge today. On a technological level, the difficulties involved in implementing many of the non-standard synthesis methods disclose implicit limitations and presuppositions of today’s computer music systems. On a conceptual level, they challenge the inherently positivistic attitudes present in much contemporary research on sound synthesis.

This seminar will explore the history of non-standard synthesis, the developer’s aesthetico-political positions, as well as possibilities of implementing non-standard synthesis methods in SuperCollider. Moreover we will present contemporary extensions of non-standard synthesis and will try to provide the participants with the possibilities to continue to experiment practically.

MIDI keyboards, slider boxes, joysticks, gamepads, are ubiquitous interfaces right now to the computers that surround us. To turn these interfaces into musical instruments there are various steps to guide the design of a playable instrument. In this seminar we will explore the basics of how to access various interfaces from SuperCollider, strategies to explore the semantics of the interfaces that we use and the data that they generate, and methods of mapping these to control sonic processes.

Tutor: Marije Baalman

Marije Baalman studied Applied Physics at the Technical University in Delft and graduated in February 2002 on the topic of Perceptual Acoustics. In 2001/2002 she followed the Sonology Course at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. She completed her Ph.D. on Wave Field Synthesis and electro-acoustic music in 2007 at the Electronic Studio of the Technical University of Berlin. Between 2007 and 2010 she was a post-doctoral researcher in Computation Arts at Concordia University in Montreal. Her research goes into the use of wireless networks for live performance (such as dance and music), and installations. She has performed and exhibited work across Europe (STEIM, WORM (NL), EXIT festival (F), Club Transmediale (D)) and beyond (Electrofringe (AU)) and collaborated with, among others, Alberto de Campo, Hannes Hölzl, Chris Salter, Michael Schumacher, Attakkalari Dance Company and Workspace Unlimited. She is a contributor to “The SuperCollider Book” (MIT Press, coming up in 2011). In her artistic work she is interested in the realtime components of the work, in that nothing is precomposed as such, but rather the (mostly, but not exclusively) sonic output depends on realtime interactions, be it of the performer, or of the audience. Thus composition becomes more the composing of behaviours and interaction modalities, creating processes, rather than fixed sound tracks. This is expressed with tools such as physical computing (performance interfaces and/or installations), livecoding (both as a skill, as well as a performance interface), digital and analog sound processing, and improvisation.

As a conclusion of SuperCollider residency where Tim Blechmann and Jakob Leben are developing a new IDE (integrated development environment) for SuperCollider - a powerful language for sound synthesis, Cyberpipe is throwing a preview party. The SC-IDE is hoped to make SuperCollider finally a cross-platform “app” (on Linux, Mac & Windows). The “party” will include a lot of (possibly live) music, informal demo and - most imporantly - free code in abundance!

Two of the core members of The Game of Life’s Foundation team will impart a 3-day seminar on realtime sound spatialization with wave field synthesis. The seminar will deal with both compositional and technical issues surrounding spatial music and, focusing on electroacustic composition for wave field synthesis systems. The Game Of Life Foundation‘s mobile wave field synthesis system (composed of 192 speakers and 12 subwoofers) will be available on-site for participants to learn to operate the system and gain hands-on familiarity with space as a compositional parameter.

Wave field synthesis is a technique for sound spatialisation. It produces “artificial” wave fronts synthesized by a large number of individually driven speakers. Such wave fronts seem to originate from a virtual starting point. Contrary to traditional spatialization techniques such as stereo, the localization of virtual sources in WFS does not depend on or change with the listener’s position. As opposed to most multichannel systems, WFS has no sweet spot and allows for a wider optimal listening area.

Arthur Sauer is a composer and performer. He has been writing electronic music, instrumental music, music for film, dance, theatre etc. He has been experimenting with spatial music for quite some time, which resulted in
founding The Game of Life Foundation. With this foundation he took the initiative to build a Wave Field Synthesis System. With Hotel Modern he created the concept op Live Animation Movies. He’s been touring all over the world.

Wouter Snoei studied at the Institute of Sonology in The Hague. He has worked in various fields of music practice, all involving electronic music. He has directed several performances of electroacoustic pieces by Luigi Nono, John Cage and Gérard Grisey. He works regularly with Slagwerkgroep Den Haag, ASKO Kamerkoor and VocalLab. Wouter also performed with Jasper Blom and other jazz artists at the North Sea Jazz festival, and as a dance producer in many Dutch club venues. In the past few years Wouters focus has shifted more and more towards composition and performance of solo live electronics and electro-acoustic music, adding live control as part of electronic composition. Furthermore Wouter is involved as composer and developer of Wave Field Synthesis, a spatial sound system involving 192 loudspeakers placed around an audience, and as a teacher at the Utrecht School of Arts and the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague.

18/19/20.05.2012 - Audiovisual programming: Mapping and visualization, by Fredrik Olofsson

This seminar will investigate the built-in graphical features of SuperCollider and how to use these artistically in combination with the sound synthesis server. We will use simple sounds and simple graphics to explore the endless possibilities of audiovisual mapping and sound visualization. The aim is to combine shapes, colours, paths and pixels with oscillators, control signals, wavetables and spectrums. At the end of the course we will have programmed a few unique audiovisual instruments and connected sound generating code to drawing routines. We will also play with drawing time and frequency domain representations of audio and looked at generating static images by plotting waveforms in non-realtime. We will code sounds that look good as well as code graphics that sound well.

A one day workshop by Fredrik Olofsson about generating strange graphics in the audio programming language SuperCollider. The idea is to not care much about how the code we write actually sounds or works, but rather that it looks cool graphically. We will deliberately perform odd math operations to mess up the audio signals and explore and abuse the scope, plot and post windows as well as draw custom waveforms and spectrograms.

The level of the workshop will not be too advanced and there is no need to be a fluent SuperCollider programmer to make interesting visuals. Bring your own headphones and a laptop with SuperCollider (3.4 or 3.5, http://supercollider.sourceforge.net/) installed. If you have trouble installing this software please come half an hour early and we will help. Workshop language is english.

REGISTRATION Workshop:
Fredrik Olofsson
Fredrik Olofsson graduated in 2000 as a composer at the Royal University College of Music in Stockholm, but has since then extended his artistic repertoire with electronics, code, video and installation art. He is a frequent contributor within the SuperCollider open source community and has held related workshop all over Europe, Asia and Australia. He is also one of the founding members of TOPLAP, a collective that popularized the use of live coding.
