18/19/20.05.2012 - Audiovisual programming: Mapping and visualization, by Fredrik Olofsson

This seminar will investigate the built-in graphical features of SuperCollider and how to use these artistically in combination with the sound synthesis server. We will use simple sounds and simple graphics to explore the endless possibilities of audiovisual mapping and sound visualization. The aim is to combine shapes, colours, paths and pixels with oscillators, control signals, wavetables and spectrums. At the end of the course we will have programmed a few unique audiovisual instruments and connected sound generating code to drawing routines. We will also play with drawing time and frequency domain representations of audio and looked at generating static images by plotting waveforms in non-realtime. We will code sounds that look good as well as code graphics that sound well.

Level: intermediate (presumes some basic SuperCollider knowledge)

18/19/20.05.2012 – Audiovisual Programming: Mapping and Visualization, by Fredrik Olofsson.

Despite lacking the slick effects and fancy 3D features found in other programming languages, programming graphics in SuperCollider is special due to one unique feature: the sharing of data and algorithms between the sound synthesis and the drawing routines. This seminar will investigate the built-in graphical features of SuperCollider and how to use these artistically in combination with the sound synthesis server. We will use simple sounds and visuals to explore the fields of audiovisual mapping and sound visualization.

Fredrik Olofsson was trained as a composer at the Royal University College of Music in Stockholm. As part of MusicalFieldsForever he has exhibited interactive art at museums and galleries.
8/9/10.06.2012 – Listening and Learning Systems for Composition and Live Performance, by Nick Collins.

This seminar will explore practical machine listening and machine learning methods within the SuperCollider environment, alongside associated technical and musical issues. Applications for such techniques range from autonomous concert systems, through novel musical controllers, to sound analysis projects outside of realtime informing musical composition. We will investigate built-in and third party UGens and classes for listening and learning, including the SCMIR library for music information retrieval in SuperCollider.

Nick Collins is a composer, performer and researcher in the field of computer music. He lectures at the University of Sussex, running the music informatics degree programmes and research group. Research interests include machine listening, interactive and generative music, and audiovisual performance. He co-edited the Cambridge Companion to Electronic Music (Cambridge University Press 2007) and The SuperCollider Book (MIT Press, 2011) and wrote the Introduction to Computer Music (Wiley 2009). iPhone apps include RISCy, TOPLAPapp, Concat, BBCut and PhotoNoise for iPad.

Location: Hangar (introductory seminar) and Fabra i Coats – Fàbrica de Creació (rest of the series).

The idea is to not care much about how the code we write actually sounds or works, but rather that it looks cool graphically. We will deliberately perform odd math operations to mess up the audio signals and explore and abuse the scope, plot and post windows as well as draw custom waveforms and spectrograms.

The level of the workshop will not be too advanced and there is no need to be a fluent SuperCollider programmer to make interesting visuals. Bring your own headphones and a laptop with SuperCollider (3.4 or 3.5, http://supercollider.sourceforge.net/) installed. If you have trouble installing this software please come half an hour early and we will help. Workshop language is english.

Get ready to get sucked into the supercollider vortex !!

SuperCollider has established itself as probably the most powerful
programming environment for real time sound synthesis,
algorithmic/generative music and all sorts of other audio-related
ap...plications. It is widely used by artists and scientists alike for
both research and actual artistic creation. It features a powerful
state-of-the-art sound engine and an easy to learn fully featured object
oriented language. More, it is open-source and totally free of charge.

This three day intensive workshop welcomes participants of any discipline
with or without prior programming or musical experience and guides them to
their first sounds, instruments and musical structures with supercollider.
Apart from a thorough introduction to the Supercollider language and the
synthesis server, the workshop aims to be an informal introduction to
algorithmic/generative music, GUI design, live coding and digital sound
synthesis with SuperCollider.

Dates, times, and location:
Wednesday 11th January 2012 - Friday 13th January 2012
11am - 6pm daily

This seminar will explore the possibilities of SuperCollider to create realtime systems for computer music. We will work following the methodology of just-in-time programming, which allows the modification of parts of an algorithm while it is executing. Likewise, we will see how to integrate our instruments with a wide variety of control devices in a flexible and reliable manner. After each session, we will evaluate the behaviour of our programs under live performance conditions.

This seminar will cover the basics of realtime sound synthesis and introduce participants to SuperCollider. Attendees will be acquainted with basic sound generators and processors (oscillators, noise generators, filters, delays) as well as with synthesis techniques such as additive and substractive synthesis and amplitude or frequency modulation. This knowledge will then be used to build synths able to be controlled programatically, by means of graphical user interfaces or using OpenSoundControl.
