xxxxx_micro_research workshops: 8_Audiovisuals with SuperCollider, 7mar 2009, Berlin

March 7th 2PM 2009: Audiovisuals with SuperCollider [with Fredrik Olofsson]
syn-er-gy | noun | the interaction or cooperation of two or more
organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined
effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.

[OED]

A one-day workshop in which we explore synergies in the form of very
direct and one-to-one relationships or mappings between sound and image.
The claim is that your music will turn out completely different as you
cross map with visual elements. And vice versa: your graphics will
look different as you code them to sound better. Audiovisual mapping
is a treasure chest of inspiration for control, generation,
organisation and systemisation of sounds. We will be using the free
software SuperCollider and, as a springboard, the article ‘Audiovisuals
with SC’ (http://www.fredrikolofsson.com/f0blog/?q=node/316). You will
learn how to make up your own synergies.

Intermediate level - some familiarity with SuperCollider required. You
should at the least know how to run and modify code examples.

–What to bring:

1) Laptop running Linux, OS X or Windows

2) SuperCollider 3 installed (version 3.2 or later): http://supercollider.sourceforge.net/

3) Headphones

4) 10 Euros participation fee [including food]

–About the Teacher:

Fredrik Olofsson, aka. redFrik, is a musician and developer who also
sometimes performs tricks with visuals and electronics.

SuperCollider workshops in New York, early April

SUPERCOLLIDER WORKSHOPS APRIL 2009

All details and sign-up at:
http://tinyurl.com/harvestcollider

SuperCollider workshops will be offered at Harvestworks in New York in early April, in the run up to the 2009 SuperCollider Symposium to be held at Wesleyan. This is a rare opportunity to learn from some of the SuperCollider developers themselves. SuperCollider is an incredible environment and programming language for music and audio. It provides an interpreted object-oriented language which functions as a network client to a state of the art, realtime sound synthesis server. SuperCollider was written by James McCartney over a period of many years, and is now an actively maintained and developed open source project. It is used by musicians, scientists, and artists working with sound and audiovisuals.

All workshops require attendees to bring their own laptops; tutors will assist with installation on OS X (10.4 or later recommended), Linux, and Windows as necessary.

The workshops being offered are:

1) Saturday 4th April: Beginners day (11am-6pm). A friendly introduction to SuperCollider for absolute beginners, aimed at artists and musicians. Aside from a little familiarity with the digital arts, no prerequisites, though some prior exposure to computer music (perhaps through Max/MSP or Csound) may be helpful. (led by Nick Collins, Dan Stowell, Jan Trützschler) $100

2) Sunday 5th April: Intermediate workshop day (11am-6pm). For those with some experience, but wanting to refresh and broaden their SC skills. Topics will include sound synthesis and analysis, interaction via GUI and controllers, generative and network music, SC programming tips and tricks and SC architecture. We will also be adaptable to participants needs, can take requests for topics, and have some general question and answer sessions. (led by Nick Collins, Dan Stowell, Jan Trützschler) $100

3) Monday 6th April evening (7-10pm). Beginner’s evening session. A friendly introduction to SuperCollider for absolute beginners, aimed at artists and musicians. Aside from a little familiarity with the digital arts, no prerequisites, though some prior exposure to computer music (perhaps through Max/MSP or Csound) may be helpful. (led by Nick Collins, Dan Stowell, Jan Trützschler)

4) Tuesday 7th April daytime (11-6). Abstract pressure cookers and virtual steam machines: Just in time programming in networks.
Not tweaking machines, but writing letters: Programs that program programs, machines that recombine structures. Replacing their parts, in effect writing their user manual at runtime. Instead of giving in to pressure to become virtuosos, we listen how the machines take the pressure - from spooky action at a distance to new exploring logics of distributed noise music. A collective workshop for live coding, sound synthesis, randomness in order. (led by Powerbooks Unplugged) $100

5) Tuesday 7th April evening (7-10pm). Compact version of Tuesday daytime session (led by Powerbooks Unplugged) $50

6) Wednesday 8th April daytime (11-6) SuperCollider Clinic. Flexible topic sessions, following participant needs, adaptable to all intermediate levels (beginners would find Saturday or Mon night helpful before this workshop). Developers will be on hand to answer questions, to present on special topics, and to demonstrate projects and works built with SC. (led by an all star cast of developers) $100

SuperCollider user-group, London, 28th Jan

The Centre for Digital Music (at Queen Mary University of London) will host a SuperCollider user-group meeting on Wed Jan 28th. It will start at 2pm, in room 105 of the Electrical Engineering building, QMUL, London E1 4NS.

No specific agenda as yet, but we’ll probably look at some of the new features in 3.3, and hear about some people’s projects.

I’m co-ordinating the event using Facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=55003010852
(Sorry to those who don’t use Facebook - please get in touch via the email address below)

Those attending from outside the college will need to be let into the building, so please make yourself known via the Facebook page or to dan.stowell at@at@at elec.qmul.ac.uk and we’ll make sure we let you in!

SuperCollider workshop, Rotterdam, 20th Dec: “Song For Two Mega-Sites”

Song For Two Mega-Sites: A free SuperCollider Workshop

We’ll build a device that will represent changing network connectivity as audio. Several of the core concepts important to the free audio language SuperCollider will be explained as the device is being put together. You can see the result here.

Requirements for participation:

1. A laptop with wifi capability and headphone output
2. Headphones
3. Download SuperCollider. Follow the instructions contained in the download to install it
4. Check that your install works correctly by running the ‘hello world’ examples here

No previous experience with audio programming is necessary, but some familiarity with scripting or programming in general will help you get the most out of the project. Ideally you should be familiar with the following terms: variable, function, array, class and instance.

I run SuperCollider on OS X. If you use Linux or windows it should be possible for you to follow the project, but it’s advisable that you work through some platform-specific tutorials beforehand to ensure you have a good understanding of the basics of navigating SuperCollider on your OS.

The workshop will take place as part of a group of interesting live acts, installations and workshops on Saturday 20th December at De Fabriek in Rotterdam. NB. The exact time of the workshop is not yet known and will be published nearer the 20th.

There are 15 places available. If you’d like to participate, please email your name to info@defabriek.nu with “Registration for SuperCollider workshop” as your subject line.
